Luis Enrique Reflects on Champions League Victory and Penalty Shootout Memories

Luis Enrique's Triumph with PSG and Reflections on Penalty Shootouts

After leading Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to their second consecutive UEFA Champions League title against Arsenal, Spanish coach Luis Enrique Martínez took a moment to reminisce about his past experiences with penalty shootouts, particularly the one that occurred during his tenure as head coach of the Spanish national team against Morocco. In an interview with Movistar Plus, he expressed, "I was heavily criticized for the loss in the Morocco shootout. When it comes to penalties, it is not just luck; it hinges on the quality of the players and goalkeepers involved, in addition to an element of chance. The outcome of a penalty shootout does not alter the performance of either our team or Arsenal's."

In his post-match comments, Luis Enrique emphasized the significance of this latest victory, noting that it marked his third Champions League title as a coach, a feat he has only seen accomplished by Real Madrid. "I’ve only witnessed this kind of achievement from Madrid, so I’m not quite sure how it feels. The first title was historic, and this one will be even more so. Paris and PSG needed to be recognized among the elite teams, and we have no intention of stepping back from that status, especially if we want to continue being associated with a style of play that resonates with fans," he stated after the tense match that concluded in a penalty shootout.

Challenges Faced and the Road Ahead for PSG

Luis Enrique acknowledged the challenges his team faced during the match, pointing out that Arsenal proved to be a highly competitive opponent, having lost very few matches throughout the season. "They started the game in the best possible way, with a bit of luck, which is crucial in finals—scoring the first goal. It was incredibly difficult, but in Paris, we seem to have a bit of good fortune on our side from time to time," he commented. When asked about his luck in penalty shootouts, he recalled the one he lost during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, reiterating that outcomes depend on player quality rather than mere chance.

He also highlighted the enthusiasm and determination of his players, stating, "I have to tell them to take a break from training because they are so eager to succeed. When someone enjoys what they do without it feeling like a chore, that’s a different kind of challenge for me. This PSG team is definitely going to compete at a high level next year. When you derive joy from your work, it comes effortlessly."

Additionally, the coach revealed his tactical approach prior to the final, which involved avoiding direct central play. He noted that frustration from Arsenal's early goal impacted his team's gameplay in the first half, a situation he attempted to rectify during halftime. "I believe we managed to create more presence in the opponent's area. In matches like these, the team that is trailing often controls the game, not the one in the lead. We are accustomed to facing teams that play defensively, but this is a different level of competition. They capitalize on any opportunity, foul, or moment, making it frustrating to play against them. However, I believe we deserved to win this final. Admittedly, Arsenal also deserved the victory, but what we have accomplished throughout the season is commendable, and we are very pleased," he concluded.
