Israeli Fraudster Captured in Marrakech
The Moroccan security services successfully apprehended a 70-year-old Israeli national named Avi Golan during a targeted operation in Marrakech. This arrest marks the conclusion of a long-standing criminal career characterized by fraudulent activities across multiple continents. Golan was wanted internationally for various charges of fraud and deception.
According to the Israeli news outlet Mako, Golan, who is infamously dubbed "the man with a thousand faces" or "the ghost," has gained notoriety for impersonating numerous individuals and using counterfeit passports to ensnare his victims. He skillfully presented himself as a billionaire, a powerful businessman, or even a humanitarian intermediary, allowing him to extract significant sums of money from hundreds of unsuspecting individuals.
The arrest took place in a villa located in an upscale neighborhood of Marrakech, where he was living under a false identity as "Yair Bibert." Following the operation, Golan was transferred to the central prison in Rabat as he awaits extradition proceedings linked to several international arrest warrants. Initial investigations reveal that he employed sophisticated scamming methods, often exploiting sensitive causes to gain the trust of his victims. Many victims proceeded to transfer funds before realizing they had been deceived.
Golan has a notorious criminal record, having spent approximately 35 years in prison and facing nearly a hundred legal proceedings against him in Israel. His fraudulent schemes have extended to various countries, including those in Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Moroccan authorities also seized falsified documents, including fake bank statements that indicated he had access to substantial funds, bolstering the credibility of his elaborate ruses.
This operation is part of Morocco's ongoing efforts to combat transnational crime and enhance international security cooperation.
