Hyundai's 20-Year Legacy of Humanitarian Efforts
The 2026 edition of Hyundai’s philanthropic initiative, known as the Desert of the Children, marks a significant milestone as it celebrates two decades of impactful humanitarian efforts. This initiative, spearheaded by Hyundai Spain for over 20 years, intertwines exhilarating 4x4 adventures through Morocco with vital humanitarian assistance. Families participating in this journey navigate the rugged desert landscape in Hyundai vehicles, delivering essential educational supplies, orthopedic equipment, and constructing critical infrastructures such as libraries and schools in underserved rural areas.
This year’s event commemorated the 20th edition, featuring a robust participation of 42 vehicles and 146 individuals. The journey commenced with the crossing from Tarifa to Tangier, facing challenging weather conditions due to heavy rains in the region over the past month. This adverse weather necessitated last-minute changes to locations and routes, showcasing the adaptability and resilience of the organizing team. Along the route, caravan members encountered washed-out roads, prompting the need for alternative off-road paths, thus testing the capabilities of Hyundai's SUVs, which were equipped with Hankook tires, including models like the Santa Fe, Kona, Tucson, and the Ioniq 9, complemented by a support Staria van.
Innovations and Community Support Initiatives
A notable highlight of the 2026 edition was the introduction of the Santa Fe XRT version, enhanced with a +38 mm lift kit (HRG) that improved ground clearance. Alongside this, the vehicle was outfitted with underbody protection, gearbox, and rear differential shields, as well as larger diameter Dynapro AT2 tires, allowing it to traverse more rugged terrains. Additionally, several hotels within the Xaluca chain have installed electric vehicle chargers, enabling the Ioniq 9 to recharge upon arrival each day.
In terms of community support, Hyundai has partnered with the Disabled Association in Boumalne Dades, providing essential rehabilitation equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers. Following this, they developed modern sports facilities in Ramlia, including an artificial turf football field aimed at enhancing the daily lives of local youth.
The initiative culminated in Erfoud, where aid was distributed to various local associations that Hyundai regularly collaborates with. Notably, the Association Tafilalet for the Disabled, also sponsored by Hyundai, serves as a day center for numerous individuals with disabilities. Equipment for rehabilitation, including wheelchairs and specialized chairs, was among the materials donated.
Additionally, the efforts of the Alain Afflelou Foundation's volunteers were pivotal in providing eye care services to the local population. In 2026, they conducted 790 vision screenings across four locations, ensuring that all individuals in need of glasses receive them. Of those screened, 430 required glasses, some needing two pairs (for near and far vision), along with 359 pairs of sunglasses. Following the screenings, the glasses will be assembled at Indo facilities in Morocco for distribution in the towns visited during the journey.
Finally, the ADN (Desert Children Association) has played a crucial role since its establishment in 2009, channeling support to various local organizations throughout the year. Their mission involves identifying the needs of local associations, analyzing them, and seeking funding, whether through corporate contributions, such as Hyundai's annual support, or from member dues, all aimed at fulfilling their objectives.
