Heavy Charges: The Ongoing Trial of MP Mehdi Alaoui in Fes
The primary criminal chamber responsible for financial crimes at the appeals court in Fes is set to resume the trial of Mehdi Alaoui, a member of the Moroccan Parliament and a prominent figure in the Socialist Union of Popular Forces party. This trial is taking place in relation to serious allegations of financial and administrative irregularities connected to the management of the municipality of Mellab, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Tinghir province.
Presided over by Judge Mohamed Lahya, the court will continue to examine the case against Alaoui, who is currently free on bail set at 100,000 dirhams. The charges he faces are severe, including embezzlement, misappropriation of public funds, abuse of power, attempted exclusion of a competitor, and forgery of official documents, as well as falsification of administrative records. The court is expecting Alaoui to appear before them on Tuesday, June 2, after previously denying a request from his defense team to delay the proceedings to allow him to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
The investigating judge had previously decided to pursue charges against Alaoui alongside six other defendants, which include officials and contractors. This decision was based on reports prepared by the General Inspectorate of Territorial Administration under the Ministry of Interior, which highlighted significant financial and administrative discrepancies during Alaoui's tenure at the municipality of Mellab.
