Grand Theatre of Rabat Opening Announcement
The highly anticipated Grand Theatre of Rabat is scheduled to officially open its doors on April 22, 2026, bringing an end to years of waiting and multiple announcements regarding its launch. The project, which was initiated by King Mohammed VI, broke ground on October 7, 2014. Designed by the renowned late architect Zaha Hadid, the theatre boasts a fluid and futuristic design inspired by the curves of the Bouregreg River.
A Landmark Architectural Achievement
This remarkable structure, overseen by Bouregreg Cultures—part of the Agency for the Development of the Bouregreg Valley—was initially estimated to cost around 1.3 billion dirhams to complete. Spanning approximately 27,000 square meters, the Grand Theatre features a main auditorium with over 1,800 seats, an open-air amphitheater that can host up to 7,000 spectators, and a space designated for experimental performances. The theatre's establishment has also involved the creation of a prestigious board of directors, which met for the first time in May 2025 and includes notable figures such as Princess Lalla Hasna and Brigitte Macron, among others, showcasing the cultural significance of this venue.
