ICESCO Launches a Cultural Landmark: The Sultan Qaboos Library

On April 16, 2026, the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) proudly inaugurated the Sultan Qaboos Library at its headquarters in Rabat, Morocco. This remarkable initiative symbolizes ICESCO's unwavering dedication to enhancing access to knowledge and fostering cultural and scientific engagement across the Islamic world. The inaugural ceremony was graced by the presence of Khalid bin Salim Bamkhalif, the Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Morocco, alongside Dr. Salim bin Mohammed Al Malik, the Director-General of ICESCO, who emphasized the importance of this establishment in supporting research and promoting educational resources.

The establishment of the Sultan Qaboos Library is a testament to the collaborative efforts between ICESCO and the Sultanate of Oman. This project, named in honor of the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, acknowledges his substantial contributions to the realms of culture and science, as well as Oman's pivotal role in fostering cultural initiatives worldwide. The library, which is integrated into ICESCO’s comprehensive knowledge framework, is managed by the Translation and Publishing Centre, furthering its mission to disseminate knowledge effectively.

A Hub for Knowledge and Cultural Exchange

The opening of the library was accompanied by a symposium organized in collaboration with the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science. This symposium focused on the vital role libraries play in knowledge transfer, promoting translation, and fostering cultural diplomacy. It also explored the collaborative relationships between cultural institutions on both Islamic and international stages, underscoring the significance of cultural exchange in today's interconnected world.

Equipped with modern facilities, the library serves as a dynamic space for reading and research, merging traditional print resources with digital archives to cater to a diverse audience that includes researchers, students, and anyone interested in cultural and scientific topics. Initially, the library boasts over 6,000 printed titles and a digital collection of nearly 200,000 titles accessible through ICESCO’s digital platform. This collection is only the beginning, with plans for expansion that will integrate more comprehensive knowledge systems and databases over time.

Among its prized holdings, the library features rare artifacts, including a handwritten copy of the Holy Quran by Ibn al Bawwab, historical manuscripts known as the Kairouan parchments, and a limited edition of "Al Masjid Al Aqsa." Furthermore, recognizing the importance of fostering a love for reading among younger generations, the library includes a special section for children, aimed at enhancing cultural awareness and connecting knowledge with ethical values and sustainable development—a reflection of ICESCO's commitment to nurturing informed future leaders.
