The Democratic Left Federation has reached out to several national institutions concerned with human rights, including the Ministerial Delegate responsible for Human Rights, regarding the situation of Liyam Ait Jadida, the local party secretary in the city of Smara. Ait Jadida is currently imprisoned due to his participation in peaceful protests demanding the fight against corruption in the funding of unity camps. The federation emphasized in its correspondence that Ait Jadida is being prosecuted for exercising his constitutional right to free expression and peaceful protest, raising serious concerns about the respect for fundamental rights and freedoms.
Furthermore, the federation highlighted what it described as irregularities related to Ait Jadida's detention conditions, including limited access to bathing facilities, poor housing conditions, and the confiscation of his writing instruments, which hindered his ability to prepare correspondence and complaints. Additionally, he was not allowed to attend one of his trial sessions before being subsequently transferred to the Oudaya prison in Marrakech.
The federation urged the relevant institutions to intervene urgently to ensure fair trial conditions, review the decision of his detention, and release Liyam Ait Jadida while dropping charges related to his exercise of the right to free expression and peaceful protest. They also called for a delegation to be sent to assess the situation of public freedoms and human rights in Smara.
In this context, the Democratic Left Federation commended the Moroccan Prison Observatory for its engagement with this case, noting that a delegation from the observatory visited Liyam Ait Jadida at Oudaya prison in Marrakech today to assess his situation and detention conditions. This was viewed as a positive step in efforts to monitor the conditions of prisoners and uphold their rights.
