Completion of Major Desalination Project in Marrakech-Safi Region

Significant Progress in the Safi-Marrakech Desalination Project

The ambitious desalination project linking Safi to Marrakech is nearing completion, boasting an impressive 98% progress rate. As of April 12, 2026, the project, fully funded by the government with a total investment of 4.2 billion dirhams, is in its final stages of commissioning. The initiative is spearheaded by the Société Régionale Multiservices (SRM) Marrakech-Safi, which indicates that the construction site is entering its last phase of operational readiness, with technical trials currently underway to ensure everything operates smoothly before the planned operational launch by the end of April.

Addressing Water Scarcity in the Region

This strategic infrastructure project aims to alleviate the severe water stress affecting the region. It is set to secure potable water supply for over one million residents across Marrakech, Tamansourt, and the Ourika Valley in the short term. Technically speaking, the desalination facility is designed with a robust network of 185 kilometers of high-strength steel pipelines, ensuring safe and sustainable water transportation. Furthermore, it incorporates three key pumping stations capable of delivering a nominal flow rate of 3.2 cubic meters per second.

The water produced from this facility will be directed to a primary reservoir with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters, located approximately 18 kilometers from Marrakech. This reservoir will play a crucial role in regulating water supply before integration into the regional distribution network. The operational deployment of the system will occur progressively, starting this April with an initial annual injection of 40 million cubic meters of treated water. This capacity is expected to double by June, enhancing the total annual transfer to 80 million cubic meters. Currently, technical teams are finalizing the last compliance tests and calibrating the installations, ensuring the optimal functionality of the entire system before full-scale operations commence.
