Strengthening Business Ties in Melilla
Ángela de Miguel, the president of the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (CEPYME), is currently visiting the autonomous city of Melilla. This visit, organized by the Confederation of Entrepreneurs of Melilla, aims to engage with the Government Delegation and the local Executive. The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance the business framework within the city while gaining insights into the specific needs of the sector to advocate for these issues in Madrid.
Enrique Alcoba, the president of the Melilla Entrepreneurs Association (CEME), articulated that the purpose of this invitation is to ensure that De Miguel effectively captures the challenges faced by local entrepreneurs and presents them to the relevant ministries, particularly since she holds the position of vice president of the CEOE (Spanish Confederation of Employers' Organizations). Alcoba highlighted that they have discussed significant concerns regarding the two main points of entry and exit—Morocco and the mainland of Spain—aiming to prompt De Miguel to make the necessary demands to the different ministries involved.
Among the longstanding issues presented to De Miguel are the functioning of the commercial customs, the social security rebate which is set to expire on December 31, and the rebate on the transportation of goods. Regarding the commercial customs, De Miguel has acknowledged this request and committed to urging the central government to consider the opening of the border to facilitate natural commercial relations with neighboring regions, similar to arrangements made at other border points in the mainland.
In her discussions with both the Government Delegation and the local Executive, De Miguel emphasized the importance of ensuring that all public policies are designed with the needs of small and medium enterprises in mind. She concluded by stating that if Melilla is to secure a prosperous future, it is imperative to cultivate stronger businesses within the region.
