CAS to Hear Senegal's Appeal Over Africa Cup Controversy in October

The Africa Cup trophy remains in Senegal, while Morocco is officially recognized as the winner. The ongoing dispute regarding the rightful champion of the Africa Cup 2025 will see the involvement of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in early October, as they will hear the appeal lodged by the Senegalese Football Federation.

On October 8, in Lausanne, Switzerland, where the CAS is headquartered, the public will be excluded from the oral hearing. This hearing is prompted by a decision from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which retrospectively awarded the final of the continental tournament in favor of Morocco.

On January 18, Senegal triumphed over Morocco in the final held in Rabat, clinching a 1-0 victory after extra time on the field. However, Morocco lodged a protest following the match, contending that the Senegalese team had temporarily left the field in protest of a referee’s decision during regular time.

The CAF Appeals Board upheld Morocco's protest, interpreting Senegal's actions as abandoning the match, thus declaring Morocco the winner by a score of 3-0 after the fact. In light of the CAF's ruling, Senegal filed an appeal with the CAS at the end of March. According to a press release issued on Friday, a decision from the CAS will not be announced on the day of the hearing.
