CAF President Patrice Motsepe Visits Senegal Amid Controversial Decision Fallout

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has officially arrived in Senegal today, aiming to alleviate the tension sparked by one of the continent's most controversial decisions in recent years. His visit comes 22 days after CAF overturned the victory of Morocco's national team in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, instead declaring Morocco the winner despite their on-field defeat to their opponent.

On March 17, the CAF Appeals Committee announced an unprecedented ruling: it awarded Morocco a 3-0 win in the final held on January 18. The crux of the matter lies in the fact that Morocco lost the match 0-1 on the pitch. This decision was based on an incident during the match where it was deemed that the players of the “Teranga Lions” (the nickname for Senegal's national team) left the field of play. Consequently, CAF altered the match result and awarded the trophy to Morocco.

This ruling has elicited strong reactions within Senegal. On March 18, the government issued a statement demanding an international investigation into “suspicions of corruption within the governing bodies” of the African confederation. In football, decisions of this nature are typically associated with disciplinary regulations and the management of incidents during matches; however, when the final result is altered based on disciplinary arguments, the debate swiftly shifts to institutional credibility and the transparency of processes.

Refusing to accept the ruling, the Senegalese Football Federation announced that it would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), a common recourse when a federation believes that a sanction or competitive ruling violates sports regulations or due process principles.

Patrice Motsepe had previously indicated in a press conference in Cairo that his visit to Senegal was intended to help calm the situation. His arrival is seen as an effort to reduce tensions between Senegalese football stakeholders and the CAF structure, amidst a backdrop where the case continues to generate significant repercussions.

Motsepe landed early this morning at Blaise Diagne International Airport near Dakar, where he was welcomed by Abdallah Faye, the President of the Senegalese Football Federation. According to the schedule announced by CAF, the confederation president will begin his stay with a tour of Gorée Island, a site of profound historical significance linked to the slave trade. Following this, he is expected to meet with Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, at the Presidential Palace.

Later in the evening, Motsepe plans to hold a press conference at one of Dakar’s hotels, where he is anticipated to discuss the sporting climate and the institutional consequences of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final case.
