CAF President Arrives for Historic Tournament
Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has made his way to Rabat, Morocco, in anticipation of the inaugural match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. This prestigious tournament, which is set to run from July 26 to August 16, marks a significant milestone as it features an expanded format with 16 competing teams, an increase from the previous 12. Upon his arrival, Motsepe was warmly welcomed by Tarik Najem, the General Secretary of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, accompanied by CAF’s acting general secretary, Samson Adamu.
Morocco's Ambitious Quest for Glory
As the host nation, Morocco is poised to kick off its campaign against Kenya at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, following the opening match between Algeria and Senegal at the Olympic Stadium. The Atlas Lionesses, who have previously finished as runners-up in the last two tournaments, are aiming to secure their first continental title. They currently lead Group A, which also includes Algeria, Senegal, and Kenya, and they are entering this competition with heightened expectations after narrowly missing victory in the finals of 2022 and 2024.
Kenya, on the other hand, will be looking to make a strong comeback after a decade-long absence from the tournament, having last participated in 2016. The expanded format of this year’s competition also serves as a crucial pathway for qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, as the top four teams will earn direct spots while the remaining quarter-finalists will vie for additional opportunities in the inter-confederation play-offs.
