ValenciaPhoto 2026: A Cultural Odyssey Through the Mediterranean

Exploring the Mediterranean Through Art at ValenciaPhoto 2026

The ValenciaPhoto festival is set to return, offering a unique opportunity to delve into the diverse voices of the Mediterranean and its rich cultural, historical, and geopolitical tapestry. The festival will showcase contemporary visual artists and thinkers, with Morocco as the guest country this year. Festival director Nicolás Llorens, alongside Nicolás Bugeda, the director-manager of the Consorci de Museus, and the Consul General of the Kingdom of Morocco, Said Drissi El Bouzaidi, highlighted the festival's significance during the event's presentation.

Running until July 31, 2026, the fifth edition of ValenciaPhoto will feature a comprehensive program that includes 17 venues, 17 exhibitions, book presentations, film screenings, conferences, engaging discussions, and performances encompassing music and theater. More than 100 photographers and visual artists will contribute to this vibrant celebration, which promises to be a melting pot of creativity and dialogue.

Llorens emphasized that this year's theme, "Mediterranean Countries," allows artists the freedom to approach the subject matter in diverse ways. This includes critical perspectives on issues such as migration, tourism, and the customs of various nations. The festival aims to address a wide range of topics, from the interplay between tradition and modernity to the environmental, migratory, and social challenges facing the region. ValenciaPhoto 2026 seeks to establish itself as a pluralistic meeting point, where the voices of the Mediterranean can resonate and reflect in a shared space.

A Celebration of Photography and Cultural Exchange

The Mediterranean has been the cradle of civilization, contributing to the evolution of human societies, advancements in mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and many other fields. It has also been a hub for intense cultural and commercial exchanges throughout history. ValenciaPhoto 2026 coincides with the international celebration of the Bicentennial of Photography, which finds an exceptional resonance in the Mediterranean context.

Nicolás Bugeda underscored the importance of supporting this festival, especially during the bicentennial of photography, to promote both local Valencian artists and those from other regions, ensuring that the art of photography is accessible to the public at large. The Mediterranean theme serves as a source of inspiration for many artists, who explore the traditions that bind us and reflect on unresolved challenges.

Consul General Said Drissi El Bouzaidi affirmed that the Mediterranean is not merely a sea that separates us, but rather a space that unites us, filled with shared histories and challenges that invite collective contemplation of the present and future. He emphasized Morocco's role as a bridge between Africa and Europe, noting that Moroccan photographers offer sensitive and critical perspectives that revisit the past, challenge stereotypes, and open new narratives about our societies, territories, and memories.

The program kicks off today with the exhibition "I serà la veu del teu poble" in the Town Hall square, inviting attendees on a photographic journey to the past through images from the early to mid-20th century. Tomorrow, the exhibition "Noire Méditerranée" by Théo Combes will open at the Centre del Carmen, showcasing the artist's travels along the Mediterranean coast from Portbou (Costa Brava) to Menton (Côte d'Azur).

Additionally, starting this Thursday, the exhibition "Mediterráneo, Espejo de Alas" will be displayed in the Plaza de la Reina, featuring six artists from cities including Casablanca, Marseille, Rotterdam, Germany, and New York. This exhibition will illustrate how the Mediterranean has been perceived as a landscape, threshold, memory, political horizon, and stage for identity performances. Other notable exhibits include "Ville(s) fatamorgana," "Rostros. El mar de culturas," "Sud," "Oxímoron," "Unidos por un océano: de los polos al mediterráneo," "¿Qué permanece cuando todo parece desmoronarse?," "Elipsis," "En bicicleta sin fronteras. El viaje de Kazimierz Nowak," and "Tránsito." The exhibition "El largo camino" by Jürgen Schadeberg will be the only one displayed outside Valencia, located at the Pérez Siquier Center in Almería.
