Current Health Status of Passengers on MV Hondius Amid Hantavirus Concerns
The health status of passengers aboard the MV Hondius, a cruise ship navigating from Argentina to the Canary Islands, is reported to be stable, with no symptoms of hantavirus observed. This follows an alarming outbreak that has drawn significant attention from the World Health Organization (WHO), which has confirmed five cases of hantavirus infection among passengers, with an additional three suspected cases. Overall, there have been eight reported cases linked to the cruise, alongside three fatalities attributed to this outbreak.
The WHO has indicated that the number of confirmed cases may rise, as there are ongoing reports of additional patients, and the prolonged incubation period of the virus necessitates careful monitoring. The MV Hondius is scheduled to arrive in Tenerife early Sunday morning; however, the ship will anchor near the port of Granadilla rather than docking. Passengers will be evacuated directly to Tenerife South Airport in vehicles designed to ensure maximum safety during transport.
Government Response and Public Health Protocols
In response to the potential health crisis, the Canary Islands government has activated a comprehensive protocol addressing infectious diseases. Two daily meetings are being held between state officials and the Canary Islands government to oversee the situation closely. Meanwhile, health authorities have assured that necessary safety measures are in place to protect both passengers and the public. A specialized high-level isolation unit at the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria has been prepared in case any passengers require immediate medical attention upon disembarkation.
Despite public concern, with around 40 demonstrators protesting in Las Palmas against the arrival of the MV Hondius, the WHO maintains that the risk to the general population remains low. It has been emphasized that strict health protocols will be followed upon the ship's arrival, including ensuring that no passengers disembark until the designated aircraft for their evacuation has arrived. Furthermore, the Spanish government is collaborating closely with Dutch authorities, given that the MV Hondius is registered under the Netherlands flag, to ensure the situation is managed effectively.
