US Humanitarian Missions Mark Historic Arrival in Dakhla Under African Lion Exercises

Historic Humanitarian Missions in Dakhla

In a significant development, the United States and Moroccan military medical teams have initiated the first humanitarian civic assistance mission in Dakhla as part of the annual African Lion military exercises. This marks a pivotal moment in the expansion of US-led military activities into the southern regions of Morocco. US Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan III, attended the operation, which has mobilized over 100 US military medical personnel collaborating with Moroccan forces to provide essential healthcare services to more than 20,000 patients in Dakhla and Taroudant, as stated by the US Embassy in Rabat.

Ambassador Buchan emphasized the historic nature of this mission, asserting that for the first time, African Lion operations have reached Dakhla, which he described as a "milestone". The humanitarian component of the exercise includes vital services such as dental hygiene campaigns, eye examinations, and the distribution of eyeglasses and hygiene kits to children. This initiative not only aids the local population but also strengthens the ties between the US and Moroccan military forces.

Expanding Military Cooperation

Since its inception in 2004, African Lion has evolved to become the largest annual military exercise led by the United States in Africa, jointly organized by the US Africa Command and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. The exercises have progressively moved southward over the years, extending into regions such as Tan-Tan and Cap Draa. However, African Lion 2026 is particularly notable as it is the first iteration to officially incorporate Dakhla as one of its operational sites.

This year’s military drills are taking place across various locations in Morocco, including Agadir, Benguerir, Tan-Tan, Taroudant, Tifnit, and Dakhla, with participation from over 5,000 personnel representing more than 40 countries. The expansion of these exercises comes in the context of deepening military cooperation between Washington and Rabat, particularly following the US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020 under the administration of President Donald Trump. Throughout his visit, Buchan reiterated this support for Moroccan sovereignty and called for a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict.

African Lion 2026 encompasses a wide range of operations, including air, land, naval, cyber, and humanitarian missions. It serves as a platform for enhancing interoperability between Moroccan and US forces, featuring joint demonstrations of airpower and innovative battlefield coordination systems. This collaborative effort not only helps to address immediate humanitarian needs but also fosters greater military integration and readiness in the region.
