Engaging Students in Water and Sanitation Careers
Mohamed Hajraoui, the head of the Purification Department at SRM Casablanca-Settat, emphasized that the initiative aims to bridge the gap between citizens and the water and sanitation professions. During a recent visit organized at the Médiouna site, he elaborated on the importance of dialogue with stakeholders, stating that SRM opens its doors to showcase its construction sites, wastewater treatment plants, and the advanced wastewater reuse system in place.
The Médiouna Wastewater Treatment Plant (STEP) represents a critical infrastructure within the region's sanitation framework. It employs a comprehensive three-stage treatment process: initial pretreatment for the removal of coarse pollutants, biological treatment addressing fine pollution and micropollution, followed by an advanced tertiary treatment utilizing ultrafiltration membranes. This innovative technology, being implemented for the first time in North Africa at this facility, enables the production of exceptionally high-quality purified water.
Hands-on Experience for Students
The visit also provided students with insights into the ongoing expansion project aimed at accommodating increased flow rates and pollutant loads. Attendees were informed about the treated water reuse system, pumping stations, and the overall water distribution network. For many students, this immersive experience proved to be enlightening. Ngangori Yan-Dominique, a student pursuing a degree in Applied Geosciences at the Faculty of Science in Ain Chock, Casablanca, expressed his astonishment at the effective treatment of water. He noted, "We were amazed to see how well the water is treated. We learned about the different stages, from pretreatment to tertiary treatment."
He further highlighted the unique aspects of the Médiouna STEP, particularly the use of advanced separation and treatment processes. "What sets this facility apart is primarily the tertiary treatment with membranes and the effective separation of wastewater from the very first stages," he added, praising the facility's commitment to ecology and sustainable water management.
Through this initiative, SRM Casablanca-Settat reaffirms its dedication to raising awareness, promoting transparency, and enhancing the value of its infrastructure in support of sustainable development and the conservation of water resources.
