Saint Lucia Stands Firm on Territorial Integrity of Morocco
On September 22, 2026, Saint Lucia officially reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco's territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Western Sahara region. This affirmation was made public through a joint statement issued following discussions between the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Affairs, and Moroccans Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and his Saint Lucian counterpart, Alva Romanus Baptiste. These talks took place in New York during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The statement emphasized Saint Lucia's full backing of Morocco's autonomy plan, which it recognizes as the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to the ongoing dispute. Additionally, it praised the growing international consensus and the dynamics fostered by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which support this autonomy plan.
Significantly, Saint Lucia welcomed the historic adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which enshrines genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole viable resolution to the artificial dispute surrounding Western Sahara.
During their meeting, the two ministers also explored avenues to strengthen bilateral relations and discussed prospects for cooperation that would fulfill the aspirations and ambitions of both nations. They further deliberated on enhancing regional partnerships between Morocco and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which is currently chaired by Saint Lucia.
At the conclusion of the discussions, Mr. Baptiste expressed the heartfelt gratitude of the Saint Lucian government and people for the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which promotes South-South cooperation grounded in efficiency, solidarity, and pragmatism. This royal vision aims to preserve stability and security in the Caribbean region through tangible socio-economic projects.
