Morocco Strengthens Its Commitment to E-Methanol and E-Ammonia for Leading the Green Molecules Market in the Euro-Mediterranean Region

Morocco's Ambitious Green Energy Goals

On April 29, 2026, the Euromed University of Fes hosted an international conference focused on e-methanol and e-ammonia, organized by the Green Hydrogen Alliance and supervised by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. This event attracted public sector stakeholders, industrialists, investors, and international experts, all united in a common goal: to establish Morocco as a prominent regional hub for green hydrogen derivatives. The conference served as a high-level platform to explore market prospects, project financing conditions, and the manufacturing pathways associated with green molecules. There is a growing conviction that Morocco possesses strong capabilities that could position it as a reference point both regionally and in the Euro-Mediterranean context.

Strategic Insights and Future Directions

Yahya Zenbar, the President of the Green Hydrogen Alliance, emphasized that the next phase requires transitioning from renewable energy production to valorization through the conversion of these energies into high-value-added products. He noted that e-ammonia and e-methanol present promising opportunities in various sectors, including fertilizers and alternative fuels. Additionally, he underscored the importance of the territorial dimension in this vision, highlighting that the southern regions of Morocco, with their significant energy potential, could serve as a competitive production base. The goal is to channel these products towards industrial conversion hubs like Jorf Lasfar or the Eastern region, facilitating their export through the Nador West Med Port, expected to become a strategic center for green chemistry aimed at European markets.

Furthermore, Daniela Duto, Deputy Head of the European Union Mission, reiterated the increasing significance of the green partnership between Rabat and Brussels. She pointed out that the EU consumes between 7 to 8 million tons of hydrogen annually and is actively seeking to decarbonize its economy by relying on hydrogen derivatives, particularly e-ammonia and e-methanol. Duto stressed the necessity for an in-depth geopolitical, legal, and economic analysis to expedite the implementation of joint projects, indicating that the upcoming phase necessitates moving from intentions to fundable and executable projects. Participants concluded that the primary challenge lies in transforming this vision into integrated industrial value chains that combine investment, legal frameworks, and international partnerships. This approach will enable Morocco to play a crucial role in the green hydrogen economy in the coming decades.
