Morocco Initiates Fundraising for $25 Billion Gas Pipeline Project to Europe

Morocco's Ambitious Gas Pipeline Project

Morocco's hydrocarbons and mining agency has embarked on a significant fundraising initiative for a proposed $25 billion gas pipeline that is set to transport natural gas from North Africa to Europe. This marks the first time the Office National Des Hydrocarbures & Des Mines, which transitioned into a public limited company in February, has undertaken such a fundraising effort, as reported by Bloomberg. The agency plays a crucial role in overseeing the licensing and development of Morocco's hydrocarbon resources, as well as its non-phosphate mineral assets.

Since 2018, Morocco has been actively working on constructing a comprehensive 6,900-kilometer gas pipeline, which includes both onshore and offshore components. This ambitious project aims to connect gas deposits in Nigeria, Senegal, and Mauritania to ten neighboring African nations. Notably, the new pipeline is expected to interface with the existing Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline, which provides a vital link between Morocco and Spain, enhancing the region's energy connectivity.

While specific details regarding the size and timing of the fundraising have not been disclosed, the importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. In April of the previous year, Morocco and Nigeria reached an agreement to establish a joint venture dedicated to managing this latest gas pipeline, which is projected to transport nearly 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from Morocco to European markets. This strategic development not only underscores Morocco's commitment to expanding its energy infrastructure but also highlights its role as a key player in the regional energy landscape.
