Moroccan Authorities Uncover Major Cocaine Smuggling Operation in Casablanca

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Moroccan police initiated a judicial investigation on Wednesday following the discovery of 45 kilograms of cocaine concealed within a shipping container at an import company located in the Sidi Bernoussi district of Casablanca. The alarming find was made by employees of an international import firm, who stumbled upon the illicit drugs hidden among food products in a shipment that had arrived by sea from a Latin American country. Authorities reported the recovery of 41 slabs of cocaine, along with a GPS tracking device cleverly concealed within the stash.

The judicial police unit in Sidi Bernoussi has taken the lead in this investigation, operating under the oversight of the relevant public prosecutor’s office. In their pursuit of justice, law enforcement is actively following leads through international security cooperation channels to identify all individuals involved in this drug operation, both within Morocco and abroad. This incident marks yet another chapter in Morocco's ongoing battle against narcotics, reflecting the country’s commitment to combatting drug-related crimes.

This recent seizure is part of a broader pattern of significant anti-narcotics operations carried out across Morocco. Just last month, police near Kenitra arrested a suspected drug trafficker and confiscated an astounding 2.4 tons of cannabis, in addition to 133 kilograms of hashish, 522 kilograms of smuggled tobacco, and smaller quantities of cocaine and powdered cannabis. In that operation, officers also seized six bladed weapons and 10 counterfeit vehicle registration plates, while a second suspect remains on the run.

In another notable incident just days later, security services at Tangier Med Port intercepted a substantial haul of 14,245 narcotic pills, including 11,145 Rivotril and 3,100 Trankimazin tablets, which were cleverly hidden within the structure of a Moroccan-registered freight truck arriving from Spain. The driver of the vehicle was promptly arrested on the scene.

Earlier this month, a joint operation conducted by judicial police along with Morocco’s domestic intelligence services led to the arrest of a 33-year-old man on the outskirts of Kenitra. Authorities seized 2,400 psychotropic pills, cocaine prepared for distribution, and cash linked to drug trafficking activities during this operation. This string of seizures highlights Morocco's pivotal geographic position as a major transit point for international drug networks operating between Latin America, Europe, and Africa.

In response to the escalating drug crisis, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) and the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) have intensified their joint operations in recent years, zeroing in on trafficking rings that facilitate the movement of narcotics and psychotropic substances throughout the country.
