Investigation Launched into Potential Misuse of Water and Electricity in Marrakech

Local Authorities Investigate Utility Mismanagement

The Governor of the Marrakech-Safi region, Farid Shouraq, has dispatched a specialized committee today to the headquarters of the Social Services Association for Employees of the Marrakech Municipal Council, located in the Daoudiat neighborhood on 5th Unit Street, to investigate potential violations related to water and electricity consumption. Local reports indicate that the committee discovered connections to water and electricity sources stemming from a meter belonging to a nearby nursery, raising questions regarding the legality and nature of this connection. Furthermore, these reports suggest the existence of documents and certificates issued by the regional multi-service company pertaining to this case.

Unusual Spike in Utility Bills

According to the same sources, the nursery in question is affiliated with an association for which the municipal council covers water and electricity bills, which typically did not exceed 1,000 dirhams monthly. However, in recent months, there has been a remarkable increase in these bills, surpassing 10,000 dirhams, prompting an investigation into the reasons behind this surge. Available data indicates that the Social Services Association operates facilities that generate significant financial income, including a regularly rented event hall and a café managed by an individual under a rental contract. This contract obligates the operator to provide a separate meter for the facility they manage, raising additional questions about how water and electricity consumption is managed within these facilities.

In this context, local sources have attributed the alleged mismanagement in handling this issue to the local authorities, claiming that the city is facing several operational constraints and challenges related to the execution and monitoring of various development projects, some of which have experienced delays recently. The committee is expected to submit its final report to the competent authorities, who will then take necessary legal and administrative measures based on the findings from the audit and investigation into the water and electricity consumption data at the headquarters of the Social Services Association for Employees of the Marrakech Municipal Council.
