Frente POLISARIO's Urgent Appeal to the UN Security Council
On June 11, 2026, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, a prominent member of the Frente POLISARIO's National Secretariat and its representative at the United Nations, reached out to Ambassador Leonor Zalabata Torres, the Permanent Representative of Colombia to the UN and the current President of the UN Security Council. In his correspondence, Dr. Omar expressed the Frente POLISARIO's vehement condemnation of the recent violent actions perpetrated by Moroccan forces against Sahrawi civilians.
In the letter, Dr. Omar extended his congratulations to Ambassador Torres on her new role as Security Council President and emphasized the pressing need for the Council’s attention regarding ongoing human rights violations in Western Sahara. He highlighted a disturbing incident that occurred on June 5, 2026, when Moroccan forces launched an attack on a group of Sahrawi civilians using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and long-range artillery in the Gleibat El-Foula region. This assault resulted in the destruction of civilian vehicles and extensive material damage, prompting an investigation by the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
Dr. Omar articulated the Frente POLISARIO's strong condemnation of these acts, stating that they reflect the violent tactics employed by Moroccan forces in their ongoing aggression against the Sahrawi people. Since November 13, 2020, when Morocco violated the ceasefire, there has been a marked increase in the use of lethal weaponry, including UAVs, leading to the unjust deaths of numerous civilians not only from Western Sahara but also from neighboring countries such as Algeria and Mauritania.
According to reports submitted to the Security Council by the Secretary-General in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, there have been multiple instances of aerial strikes by the Moroccan military that resulted in civilian casualties and damage to property. However, these documented cases only represent a fraction of the actual incidents, as many go unreported.
In light of these circumstances, the Frente POLISARIO reiterated its position that the intentional targeting of civilians constitutes a war crime under the Statute of the International Criminal Court and breaches international humanitarian law applicable in armed conflicts. Dr. Omar called for Morocco, as the occupying power, to be held accountable for its ongoing crimes against humanity and violations of international law in Western Sahara.
The recent attacks occurred during the visit of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, revealing a troubling intent by Morocco to undermine UN-led peace initiatives and escalate military tensions further. Dr. Omar urged the Security Council to take a decisive stand against these destabilizing actions that threaten regional peace and security, asserting that silence on the matter is not an option.
In conclusion, Dr. Omar expressed his highest respect and consideration to Ambassador Torres, emphasizing the critical need for universal adherence to international humanitarian law without exceptions or selectivity.
