Hyundai Motor Delivers Electric Buses to Morocco
On September 22, 2026, Hyundai Motor, a prominent South Korean automobile manufacturer, announced the commencement of the delivery of 15 Elec City electric buses to Marrakech, Morocco. This initiative is part of a public development aid project in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the city of Marrakech. Notably, this marks the first introduction of the Elec City model in Morocco, reflecting Hyundai's commitment to advancing sustainable transportation solutions globally.
The Elec City buses are designed to significantly reduce emissions, thereby contributing to improved air quality in Marrakech's bustling tourist areas. This aligns with Morocco's ambitious environmental goals, as the country aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030 compared to its business-as-usual scenario and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The addition of these electric buses is expected to alleviate urban transport costs and cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly public transportation.
In addition to the electric buses, the KOICA plans to provide fast-charging stations, on-site training, and promote technological cooperation between South Korea and Morocco. A ceremonial event was held on Monday in Wanju, North Jeolla Province, to mark the dispatch of the first two assembled buses, where Moroccan Ambassador to South Korea, Chafik Rachadi, expressed optimism about the project enhancing public transport systems in Marrakech and facilitating Morocco's carbon neutrality objectives. An additional ceremony is slated to occur in Morocco during the first half of the upcoming year, celebrating the arrival of all 15 electric buses.
