Former Moroccan Deputy Minister Sentenced to 13 Years for Embezzlement

Former Deputy Minister Faces Harsh Sentencing for Corruption

The criminal chamber of the Casablanca Court of Appeal has delivered a significant verdict, sentencing Mohamed Moubdii, the former Deputy Minister for the Civil Service, to a substantial prison term of 13 years. This ruling is accompanied by a hefty fine of 30 million dirhams, which translates to approximately €2.79 million. Moubdii, who previously served as the president of the Fkih Bensalah municipal council from 1997 until his arrest in April 2023, was found guilty of several grave offenses, including the embezzlement of public funds, abuse of power, corruption, and the falsification of various types of documents, spanning private, commercial, and official categories.

This conviction is a direct result of a complaint lodged by the Casablanca-Settat branch of the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Assets, highlighting the growing concern regarding the integrity of public officials in Morocco. The case against Moubdii has been closely monitored, culminating in a public prosecutor’s request for his conviction, which also included a demand for the confiscation of funds that were allegedly misappropriated through the embezzlement activities.

The prosecutor emphasized that Moubdii, in his role as both an authorizing officer and a municipal official, was expected to act as a guardian of public funds, a responsibility protected by law. This perspective reinforced the justification for the seizure of assets linked to the alleged offenses, showcasing a legal framework aimed at safeguarding public resources from malfeasance. The judgment comes after extensive hearings that attracted significant public interest and engagement across social media platforms, reflecting a society increasingly vigilant about accountability and transparency in governance.
