Exploring Water Treatment: SRM Casablanca-Settat Hosts University Students at Médiouna STEP

University Students Discover the Médiouna Wastewater Treatment Plant

On April 28, 2026, approximately thirty undergraduate students specializing in Geosciences from the Faculty of Aïn Chock had the unique opportunity to explore the intricacies of the Médiouna Wastewater Treatment Plant (STEP) in Casablanca. This enlightening visit was orchestrated by the Société Régionale Multiservices (SRM) Casablanca-Settat, emphasizing the significance of sustainable water resource management and environmental preservation.

Immersive Learning Experience at the STEP Facility

Transforming the wastewater treatment facility into an open-air classroom, the students gained firsthand insights into the essential infrastructures maintained by SRM. This initiative not only showcases SRM's commitment to transparency and community engagement but also aims to foster a greater understanding of the technical processes involved in wastewater management. The visit is part of a broader dialogue strategy by SRM, designed to familiarize diverse audiences—ranging from students and researchers to local officials and media—with its critical projects and operations.

During their tour, the students learned about the comprehensive three-step treatment process employed at the Médiouna facility, which includes preliminary treatment for coarse pollutants, biological treatment for fine pollutants, and tertiary treatment to ensure high-quality effluent. Mohamed Hajraoui, the Head of the Purification Service at SRM, highlighted the importance of these educational experiences in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in the field of water management.

Moreover, the facility utilizes advanced ultrafiltration membrane technology—a pioneering innovation in North Africa. This state-of-the-art method significantly enhances the quality of treated water. Alongside the operational aspects, students were also shown the ongoing expansion project, which is vital for accommodating the increasing wastewater flow and pollutant loads in the region, thus ensuring the sustainability of these essential infrastructures.

For these aspiring Geoscientists, the visit proved invaluable, as they were able to witness the real-world applications of their studies. Ngarori Yan-Dominique, a student in the Applied Geosciences program, expressed surprise at the efficiency of the treatment process, noting how the experience allowed them to observe the journey from initial treatment to the final stages. Through such educational initiatives, SRM Casablanca-Settat not only showcases its technological solutions for sustainable resource management but also reinforces its commitment to environmental protection and the enhancement of sanitation infrastructure in the Greater Casablanca area.
