EasyJet Launches Direct Flight Route Connecting Strasbourg and Marrakech

Last Sunday marked the inauguration of a new direct flight route connecting Strasbourg to Marrakech, operated by the low-cost airline EasyJet. This new service will provide two flights each week between Strasbourg-Entzheim Airport and Marrakech Menara Airport, specifically on Thursdays and Sundays. The primary aim of this connection is to enhance air travel between these two cities, which previously relied on indirect flights or transit through other airports.

The newly established route is anticipated to offer a more seamless travel experience for passengers, catering to tourists, business travelers, and the Moroccan community residing in the area. The Moroccan Consul General in Strasbourg, Soumya Bouhamidi, emphasized that this route represents a significant step towards strengthening cooperation and expanding travel opportunities between the two countries. Furthermore, she highlighted its potential to stimulate economic exchanges, support the tourism sector, and reinforce ties across the Mediterranean.

Additionally, the importance of this connection for the Moroccan community in eastern France cannot be overstated. It not only serves as an air transport service but also plays a vital role in bridging distances between families, thereby preserving human and cultural connections. Gilles Tilly, the President of Strasbourg International Airport, expressed his satisfaction regarding the success of the first flight, which achieved a full occupancy rate both to and from Marrakech on an Airbus A319 with a capacity of 157 seats.

The launch of this flight is part of the airport’s strategy to diversify its operations and attract more airlines. Tilly noted that this new connection responds to a growing demand for travel and will facilitate journeys for families, students, businesspeople, and tourists alike. Many passengers have expressed their contentment with this move, appreciating the comfort and time savings it offers compared to the previous necessity of traveling through other airports such as Basel or Baden-Baden, or enduring exhausting layovers.

This development comes amid a broader dynamic to expand the air network towards Morocco, particularly with Marrakech’s bolstered status as a global tourist destination and international hub. Moreover, it aligns with EasyJet's expansion plans in the Moroccan market, which is witnessing notable growth, as the airline intends to operate 19 flight routes from seven French airports by 2026. This expansion also focuses on the establishment of a new operational base in Marrakech, marking the company’s first in Africa, aimed at enhancing capacity and launching additional air routes between Morocco and Europe.
