Intensive Search Underway for Missing U.S. Soldiers in Morocco

Military Operations Intensify in Search for Two U.S. Soldiers

In a significant display of international cooperation, over 600 military personnel from various nations are currently engaged in an extensive search operation for two missing U.S. soldiers who vanished during military exercises in Morocco. Authorities reported on Wednesday that the search focuses on underwater caves and the Atlantic coastline, marking the fifth day of efforts since the soldiers went missing. The soldiers disappeared last week near the training grounds of Cap Draa, located on the outskirts of Tan-Tan, a coastal city in southwestern Morocco. Preliminary reports suggest that the soldiers were on an excursion and may have fallen into the ocean.

The search operation involves not only U.S. forces but also Moroccan troops and military participants from other nations involved in the multinational exercises known as “African Lion 26.” This year’s exercises commenced in April and span across four countries—Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal—mobilizing over 7,000 troops from more than 30 nations. As the current iteration of the exercises approaches its conclusion on Friday, this has become the largest joint military training event conducted by the U.S. in Africa since 2004.

Advanced Resources Deployed for Search Efforts

The Moroccan Navy has released footage showcasing military divers inspecting underwater caves, aircraft surveying the ocean surface, and teams of uniformed personnel along with canine units patrolling the rugged coastline. Various Moroccan military units are actively participating in the search efforts. Additionally, two vessels from the maritime training component of the exercises have been reassigned to assist in the search, including a European multi-mission Moroccan frigate and a French multipurpose supply ship. A U.S. logistical ship remains operational in support of the exercise while also contributing to the search efforts.

The aviation component involved in the search includes a U.S. UC-35 Citation jet, a U.S. Army C-12 Huron aircraft, as well as Moroccan Puma and Super Puma helicopters. Several technology providers participating in the exercises have deployed unmanned aerial systems to enhance surveillance capabilities in the search area, highlighting the advanced resources being utilized in this critical operation. The priority remains firmly on the well-being of the two missing soldiers and their families, as stressed by a U.S. defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the situation.
