Severe Immigration Challenge in Ceuta
In an alarming development, more than a thousand migrants, including both adults and minors, have successfully crossed into Ceuta over the past week, according to reports from the Government Delegation. This surge in arrivals has led to an "extraordinary pressure on reception resources," resulting in the collapse of the child protection system and overwhelming the Temporary Immigrant Stay Center (CETI). The majority of these undocumented migrants have made their perilous journey by swimming across the breakwater separating Morocco from the Spanish city. The situation has raised significant concerns within the government, as images depicting numerous floatation devices washed ashore and individuals fleeing from authorities starkly illustrate the dire circumstances being faced on a daily basis.
Dangerous Crossings and Uncontrollable Conditions
Just a few hours during the night from Monday to Tuesday saw approximately 70 individuals successfully cross, celebrating their achievement with shouts, jumps, and laughter. A photo captured two young men still clad in wetsuits, flashing victory signs while smiling at the camera. However, this scenario is far from celebratory for the authorities. The JUPOL Police Union has reported that the situation has become completely uncontrollable. According to Joaquín Martín, immigrants are arriving "by swimming, in small boats, and through various other means, all in a totally unregulated manner." Many migrants do not hesitate to plunge into the sea from the Moroccan side, risking their lives to reach the Spanish city.
The journey across the water is perilous, especially given the recent adverse weather conditions characterized by fog and wind, culminating in their arrival at the rocky breakwater. Many of those who have made this treacherous swim report taking three to four hours to reach their destination without stopping. The Civil Guard has been unable to manage this situation effectively, and neither has the Moroccan Navy, which is supposed to be coordinating efforts. Throughout the night, they have rescued over 500 individuals attempting to swim into Ceuta, highlighting a long-standing issue that has persisted for years without adequate preventive measures being applied at maritime borders.
Currently, these hundreds of migrants are sleeping outdoors and around the temporary reception center, which has confirmed that it is completely overwhelmed. Outside its doors, around 400 individuals are waiting for assistance, illustrating the urgent need for a comprehensive response to this ongoing immigration crisis.
