Continuous Efforts to Ensure Water Quality
Mohamed Lahlo, the regional director of the production sector at the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water in the Fes-Meknes region, has emphasized that the relevant authorities are diligently monitoring water quality following the second malfunction that occurred in a one-meter-diameter pipeline originating from the Idriss I dam in the Benjlik area. He stressed that the complete restoration of normal conditions is closely tied to resolving the technical issues related to leakages.
In a statement to the news outlet 'Today 24', Lahlo clarified that the office is currently focused on tracking water quality and ensuring it meets the required standards. He pointed out that the root cause of these issues primarily stems from the clayey nature of the soil in the area, which has led to the emergence of some leakages in the pipeline.
Community Frustration Amid Water Supply Disruptions
The regional director further stated that determining an exact date for returning to normalcy remains challenging at this time, as it depends on the progress of the repair works and the outcomes of quality monitoring. He added that he cannot currently commit to a specific timeline but assured that they are continuously working on the water quality issues to enable the regional company to restore the normal distribution of potable water.
It is worth mentioning that the technical services had completed repairs on the first malfunction related to the 1800 mm diameter pipeline on Saturday, July 25, 2026, only for another breakdown to occur the following day, Sunday, July 26, 2026, involving a different 1000 mm diameter pipeline.
As the repair work continues, residents in several neighborhoods of Fes have expressed their dissatisfaction with the repercussions of the water outage that has persisted for more than three days. One resident from the Narjis neighborhood shared with 'Today 24' that the brief resumption of water supply did not resolve the issue, explaining that the supply was weak and did not reach all parts of her home. She noted that water had only reached the toilet and not the kitchen or bathroom.
The affected resident added that the return of water during the morning hours was insufficient to remedy the situation, stating that the supply was weak and limited, as it did not reach various areas of the household before it was interrupted again after just a few hours. She mentioned that families were forced to utilize the minimal amount of available water to store some essential needs and manage their daily requirements.
The resident explained that this situation has set families back to square one, as they found themselves once again facing water shortages, adding that the quantities they had stored were only enough to cover part of their immediate needs, leading to continued suffering amid ongoing disruptions.
