US Mission and Green Bay Packers Promote Student-Athlete Model in Rabat

Celebrating the Student-Athlete Model in Morocco

The United States Mission to Morocco recently organized an impactful sports diplomacy event at the Lycée d’Excellence de Rabat, which took place on Thursday, June 4, 2026. The event brought together representatives from the Green Bay Packers, Morocco’s national flag football team, and local students, all aimed at promoting the concept of the American “student-athlete” model. This model emphasizes the importance of balancing academic pursuits with athletic performance, along with a strong commitment to community service. E. Rose Custis, the director of Dar America, articulated the essence of the event, stating, “We are here to celebrate the student-athlete, this uniquely American concept where students are on a university campus not only to get an education, but also to give back to their university and community through sport and community service.”

Empowering Youth Through Sports and Community Engagement

The initiative serves multiple purposes: it aims to encourage academic excellence, foster civic engagement, and develop the technical skills necessary for students aspiring to become high-level athletes. The day's activities began with a panel discussion focused on the critical role of sports in social development, using the Green Bay Packers as a case study to illustrate how sports teams can have a significant community impact, contribute to the economy, and engage youth in meaningful ways. Following this enlightening discussion, participants engaged in an interactive training session that included dynamic stretching, agility drills, skills circuits, tactical exercises, precision challenges, and a mini-tournament. Nabyl Bekraoui, head of the Sports Science Laboratory at Lycée d’Excellence, remarked on the importance of the event, noting that it provided students with a tangible understanding of the vital role athletes can play in society. He stated, “Today’s event with the Green Bay Packers was a great opportunity for our students to see what it really means to give back to the community.”

Furthermore, Bekraoui highlighted the Packers' community-owned model, which exemplifies the strong connections between athletes and society, particularly through initiatives aimed at supporting cancer patients and orphaned children. Chris Cohorst, a member of the Green Bay Packers, also took part in the event, engaging with members of We Can Morocco to discuss the development of flag football and share valuable insights from the team’s experiences. The training session involved dozens of students and is part of a more extensive, ongoing partnership that aims to enhance access to sports and youth development opportunities across Morocco.
