Collaboration for Advanced Military Training in Morocco
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco have entered into a significant memorandum of understanding aimed at establishing the Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC). This ambitious initiative is set to unfold in Tan-Tan, Morocco, by the year 2030, and it will encompass three critical components: a multidomain training area, a dedicated drone academy, and a state-of-the-art innovation and experimentation center.
The multidomain training area will provide a unique environment for operations across the complete electromagnetic spectrum and will simulate contested environments, enabling military personnel to prepare for various challenges. At the heart of this initiative is the drone academy, which aims to equip operators, planners, and instructors from Morocco and other partner nations with the skills necessary to enhance their counter-terrorism capabilities, particularly in relation to threats faced in West Africa. The curriculum will emphasize vital areas such as airspace deconfliction, multidomain integration, and the synchronization of strike capabilities alongside intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations.
Furthermore, the innovation and experimentation center will play a pivotal role in the development, testing, and evaluation of emerging military capabilities, with a particular focus on crafting low-cost, scalable solutions for counterterrorism and regional security operations. This center is expected to foster collaborations with academic institutions, incorporating experts and scholars into cross-functional design teams to leverage their knowledge and insights effectively.
According to statements from the US military, AMTEC will function as a testbed for pioneering wireless and sensing technologies. The upcoming African Lion 2027 exercise is anticipated to serve as a proof of concept for the center, showcasing the integration of emerging technologies into real-world operational scenarios. During this annual exercise, military service members will collaborate with industry partners to trial advanced AI-enabled systems, autonomous platforms, and cutting-edge communication tools.
