Unprecedented Heat Wave and Unstable Weather Conditions in Morocco
The ongoing summer heat is significantly impacting various regions across Morocco, with forecasts indicating that this heat wave will persist from Friday through Sunday. Some inland areas may experience soaring temperatures, reaching as high as 47 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the northern highlands are expected to see localized thunderstorms by the end of the weekend.
According to Hussein Yabed, the communication officer at the National Meteorological Directorate, the weather will remain predominantly hot, particularly in the eastern regions, the Moulouya Valley, Saïs plain, the western Atlas foothills, as well as in Souss, Chiadma, the southeastern regions, and the interior of southern provinces. In these areas, the maximum temperatures are projected to range between 39 and 47 degrees Celsius.
Conversely, the weather will be milder in the Atlas mountains and near the coast, with temperatures between 25 and 32 degrees Celsius. Other regions of the country are anticipated to record temperatures ranging from 33 to 38 degrees Celsius. Regarding the general weather conditions, Yabed noted that the Atlantic coasts, particularly the central and southern parts, will experience low clouds accompanied by fog during the morning and night hours, with a slight chance of light drizzle locally on Saturday.
Furthermore, unstable clouds are expected to form over the High and Middle Atlas mountains during the afternoon hours, with these weather disturbances likely extending to the Rif and northern eastern regions on Sunday, which may bring about local thunderstorms.
Concerning wind patterns, Yabed mentioned that winds will be moderate to fairly strong in the eastern region, the Atlas mountains, plains, and the central coasts, along with the southern provinces, with a likelihood of dust being stirred up locally, especially in the eastern and southern areas.
Looking ahead to next week, the National Meteorological Directorate anticipates that the hot weather will continue in the interior, eastern, and southern regions, with the formation of cumulonimbus clouds over the Atlas mountains and Rif during afternoon hours. There is also an expectation of a gradual increase in temperature at the beginning of the week, followed by a decrease towards the end, indicating a slight relief from the intensity of the heat wave.
