Turkish Mevlevi Dervishes Enchant at the Fes World Sacred Music Festival
In a vibrant celebration of culture and music, the Fes World Sacred Music Festival, now in its 29th edition, concluded on Sunday evening in the enchanting city of Fes, located in northern Morocco. The festival brought together a diverse array of talent, featuring 160 artists from numerous musical ensembles representing countries such as India, Morocco, Palestine, Iraq, Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, Egypt, China, Ghana, Brazil, Germany, and France. One of the highlights of the closing ceremony was the participation of the renowned Turkish Sufi group, the Mevlevi Dervishes, who captivated the audience with their mesmerizing performance, attended by the globally celebrated artist Sami Yusuf.
The Mevlevi Dervishes are known for their unique whirling dance, which involves spinning counterclockwise around a central point. Through this spiritual dance, participants enter a state of deep meditation that transcends the physical world, allowing them to reach a level of spiritual purity. Clad in their traditional white robes, the dervishes engaged the Moroccan audience, who responded with enthusiastic applause and admiration for the group's artistry.
The festival's opening ceremony took place on Thursday evening, focusing on traditional crafts and the rich cultural heritage of Fes. This artistic experience combined music, imagery, movement, and spiritual symbolism, creating a unique atmosphere that celebrated the city's historical significance. The Fes World Sacred Music Festival, established in 1994, has become one of Morocco's most significant cultural and artistic events, serving as a bridge that connects diverse cultures and peoples.
