The Royal Theater of Rabat Opens: A New Era for the City of Light

The Grand Opening of the Royal Theater in Rabat

The inauguration of the Royal Theater in Rabat on April 22, 2026, stands as a significant milestone in the cultural landscape of Morocco. Nestled in the heart of the Bouregreg Valley, between the iconic Hassan Tower, the Mohammed V Mausoleum, and the newly erected Mohammed VI Tower, this remarkable structure symbolizes the vibrant spirit of "Rabat, the City of Light." The grand opening was graced by the presence of Princesses Lalla Khadija, Lalla Meryem, and Lalla Hasnaa, along with France's First Lady, Brigitte Macron, showcasing a fusion of cultures and the importance of arts in national development.

Hundreds of creatives, intellectuals, and members of the diplomatic community gathered to celebrate an evening dedicated to the arts, highlighting their role as a pillar of national progress. The event kicked off with a film that chronicled the modernist approach taken in the architectural design of this unique venue. Yet, it was the musical opening that left a lasting impression. Farid Bensaid, a board member of the Theater Foundation, described the rendition of the national anthem by a children's choir and orchestra as a particularly moving and symbolically significant moment.

A Showcase of Moroccan Talent and Universal Repertoire

The inaugural performance boldly presented an entirely Moroccan cast, including conductor, orchestra, soloists, and children's choir. The event marked a historic collaboration between two esteemed institutions: the 30-year-old Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra and the 20-year-old Royal Symphony Orchestra. Under the baton of conductor and pianist Dina Bensaïd, 76 musicians and 40 choristers united their talents to create a program that bridged national heritage with global repertoire. Highlights included classical piano pieces by Marouan Benabdallah set to Tchaikovsky, operatic arias by Bizet and Verdi sung by mezzo-soprano Ahlima Mhamdi, and traditional Arabo-Andalusian music performed by Samira Kadiri. The oud contributions by virtuoso Driss El Maloumi showcased a contemporary piece infused with Moroccan sonorities.

The evening's acoustic quality was another revelation, with the orchestra performing without amplification. Bensaid noted that experiencing the performance from the audience provided a new appreciation for the art form, remarking on the venue's incredible acoustics that allowed for a harmonious sound even in traditionally amplified sections. The Royal Theater of Rabat is not limited to classical music; it is designed to accommodate all forms of art. The orchestra pit enables the production of ballets and operas, adhering to the highest standards of artistic expression.

This inauguration is merely the beginning of a cultural renaissance in the capital, reinforcing values of intercultural dialogue. As Bensaid emphasized, this facility will finally offer a prestigious platform for classical music and other genres, reflecting Morocco's international ambitions in the arts.
