The 2026 World Cup: A Historical Milestone for Soccer in North America

The 2026 World Cup is poised to become one of the most significant tournaments in soccer history, not only due to the increase in participating nations but also because of the compelling narratives that will unfold across the three host countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. This upcoming event marks a remarkable opportunity for Mexico, which will host the World Cup for the third time, with the Estadio Ciudad de México (Banorte) set to become the first stadium to host three World Cups, a venue rich with memories and stories from past tournaments, featuring everything from champions to first-time participants.

During the tournament featuring 16 teams in the past, three nations made their debut: Morocco, Israel, and El Salvador. Each of these countries faced unique challenges on their journey to the global stage, with some overcoming issues stemming from wars and social unrest to earn their place in the competition. One such team, which is now considered a strong contender, broke a lengthy drought of over 30 years without African representation in a World Cup over 50 years ago.

The Middle Eastern team had its first and only appearance in a World Cup on Mexican soil, representing Asia in that tournament. They were placed in Group B, alongside Italy, Sweden, and Uruguay, unfortunately exiting in the initial stage without advancing further.

The CONCACAF team experienced a tumultuous journey to its first World Cup qualification, marked by a highly charged match against Honduras. The political tensions and hostilities between the two nations culminated in what became known as the Football War, or the 100 Hours War, making this qualification all the more significant.

In the World Cup featuring 24 participating countries, Denmark made its debut, capturing global attention after previously reaching the semi-finals of Euro 1984. Their first World Cup was in Mexico in 1986, where they surprised many by progressing to the Round of 16.

In that same tournament, Iraq, under the guidance of Brazilian coach Evaristo de Macedo, entered Group B alongside Mexico, Paraguay, and Belgium, unfortunately finishing at the bottom of their group without a win.

One of the three host nations for the 2026 World Cup also made its debut during the 1986 championship in Mexico, entering Group C but failing to secure any victories or goals against formidable opponents like France, Hungary, and the Soviet Union.
