Reports indicate that several players from the national team fell victim to theft while residing at a hotel in Morocco, where they had been staying during their training sessions. The team arrived in Casablanca earlier this week and had just concluded a friendly match against Tanzania, setting the stage for their opening Group C encounter against Malawi. As the defending champions, they aim to secure their 11th African title, but their focus has been temporarily diverted due to the unfortunate incident of theft.
While the Super Falcons were away, it has been reported that cash was stolen from their hotel rooms at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca. Among the affected players, forward Esther Okoronkwo emerged as the most significant victim, losing a total of $700. Other players, including team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and veteran defender Osinachi Ohale, reported losses of $200 and $100, respectively. Midfielder Halimatu Ayinde was also a victim of the theft, losing another $100, while Joy Omewa had $120 taken from her belongings. In total, the amount stolen from the players reached a staggering $1,220. Okoronkwo took to social media to express her frustrations about the situation, indicating that her attempts to address the issue with those in charge were met with a lack of respect.
As of now, there has been no official statement from either the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) or the Marriott Hotel regarding this distressing incident, nor has it been confirmed if a formal investigation is underway. Despite this setback, the Super Falcons are expected to maintain their focus as they prepare for their WAFCON 2026 campaign. They are set to kick off their tournament journey against Malawi on July 28 at Stade El Rabid and will subsequently face Zambia and Egypt in their remaining group matches.
