Five Moroccan Women Repatriated from Al-Hol Camp

In a significant development, five Moroccan women have been successfully repatriated from the Al-Hol refugee camp, located in northeastern Syria. This operation was the result of meticulous administrative and legal coordination between the Moroccan Coordination for Stranded and Detainees in Syria and Iraq, alongside the Moroccan Embassy in Damascus. The repatriation represents not only a personal victory for the women involved but also highlights the efforts of Moroccan authorities to safeguard their citizens abroad.

According to sources from Hespress AR, the women hail from three different cities in Morocco: two from Tangier, another two from Tetouan, and one from Khouribga. This diversity underscores the widespread impact of the crisis affecting Moroccan nationals in conflict zones. The process of repatriation necessitated the submission of specific identification documents, which were thoroughly verified by the Moroccan Embassy. Subsequently, these documents were processed by the Syrian immigration and judicial authorities, ensuring compliance with legal requirements for their return.

After receiving final legal clearance and paying a nominal administrative fee of $30, the women embarked on their journey home, traveling via Qatar. This route was strategically chosen in light of new passport restrictions imposed by Turkish transit authorities, which complicated travel plans for many. Upon their arrival in Morocco, the returnees underwent standard airport processing. Fortunately, they were able to reunite with their families without facing any further legal actions, marking a bittersweet yet hopeful end to their ordeal.

However, while this repatriation is a cause for celebration, it is important to note that approximately 54 Moroccan women remain stranded in the Al-Hol refugee camp. Their return is currently hindered by a myriad of complex legal challenges. These challenges primarily revolve around the documentation of marriages that were contracted in Syria, the establishment of paternity for children born in the region, and the provision of legal proof for deceased spouses. The relevant authorities are actively processing these files and are working diligently to ensure that all necessary background checks and legal clearances are completed to facilitate the repatriation of these remaining individuals.
