Strengthening Ties: Spain and Morocco's Historic Partnership

Spain-Morocco Relations at an All-Time High

José Manuel Albares, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation, has recently emphasized that the partnership between Spain and Morocco is currently experiencing unprecedented levels of cooperation. During an interview on the program 'Al Rojo Vivo' aired by La Sexta and covered by Europa Press, Albares discussed the implausibility of Morocco seeking assistance from the United States for the decolonization of Ceuta and Melilla. He described such speculation as 'absurd,' particularly in light of the positive rapport Morocco shares with the U.S. and Spain's distancing from the Trump administration.

Albares firmly stated, 'We are indeed discussing matters that are completely absurd,' while also highlighting his 'extraordinary relationship' with his Moroccan counterpart. He indicated that the focus of their discussions is consistently on deepening their friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation. This collaboration spans various domains, including the fight against human trafficking, as well as police and judicial matters. Albares reaffirmed that Spain is a 'primary partner' of Morocco, noting that their relationship is at a historical peak.

A Friendship Like Never Before

He expressed, 'The friendship between Spain and Morocco has reached levels never before seen in history, serving as an example for many countries around the world regarding bilateral relations.' Albares reiterated that this partnership is trending towards even greater harmony and camaraderie. Addressing concerns raised by a Republican senator regarding the potential relocation of U.S. military bases from Spain to Morocco, Albares assured that there are no indications from either Spain or the United States suggesting a reevaluation of the current status of these bases.

Furthermore, he underscored Spain's role as a key ally and first-rate partner within NATO, crucial for Euro-Atlantic security, with nearly 4,000 soldiers currently deployed on NATO missions. In addition to military cooperation, he pointed out Spain's significant commercial relationship with the U.S., highlighting a strong trade surplus, particularly in the energy sector, as Spain has become a major purchaser of American gas.
