Morocco's Diplomatic Efforts in Mexico
Abdelfattah Lebbar, the Moroccan ambassador to Mexico, has articulated that Mexico's recognition of the separatist entity remains the primary obstacle in diplomatic relations between Rabat and Mexico City. In an interview with the Mexican program _Bety en Acción_, the ambassador underscored this issue as _“the thorn in the side”_ of bilateral relations. He expressed optimism that Mexico would reconsider its stance in light of the latest United Nations resolutions, emphasizing the potential for enhanced economic, cultural, and tourism cooperation between the two nations.
Lebbar highlighted Morocco's ongoing efforts to engage with Mexican counterparts to foster a more harmonious relationship, asserting that a shift in Mexico's position could pave the way for new cooperative opportunities. Despite the political divergence, he noted that bilateral relations are currently experiencing a period of increasing dynamism. He pointed out that Mexico is Morocco's primary partner in the Arab world and the second in Africa, with over 60 Mexican companies, including the well-known Bimbo, established in Morocco, illustrating the strengthening economic ties.
Cultural Initiatives and Tourism Growth
Additionally, the ambassador announced exciting new cultural projects, including an upcoming cooperation agreement with the state of Puebla aimed at promoting exchanges between artisans from both countries. Discussions are already underway with the Ministry of Culture and local authorities in Puebla to formalize a partnership that will facilitate joint initiatives, particularly in traditional ceramics. Lebbar emphasized the cultural similarities between Puebla's Talavera pottery and Moroccan craftsmanship, especially the ceramic art from Safi, which reflects a shared heritage developed over centuries.
In the realm of tourism, Lebbar noted the significant growth in visitor numbers from Mexico to Morocco, identifying Mexicans as the leading Latin American tourists to the kingdom. He credited the continued increase in travelers to the positive recommendations from those who have previously visited. However, he acknowledged that the lack of direct flights poses a significant challenge to further enhancing these exchanges. Furthermore, he confirmed Morocco's participation in various cultural activities in Chapultepec and the Zócalo in Mexico City, coinciding with the upcoming World Cup, as part of an initiative to showcase Moroccan culture, cuisine, and tourism offerings to the Mexican public.
