Strengthening Military Ties: Morocco and the USA Outline New Defense Cooperation Framework for 2026-2036

Morocco and the USA Forge New Military Cooperation Agreement

In a significant advancement of military collaboration, Morocco and the United States have officially adopted a comprehensive new roadmap for defense cooperation spanning the years 2026 to 2036. This agreement was finalized during the 14th meeting of the U.S.-Morocco Defense Consultative Committee, held from April 14 to 16, 2026, in Washington, D.C. The primary objective of this strategic partnership is to bolster cooperation in defense industries and cybersecurity, underscoring the importance both nations place on mutual security and operational readiness.

During this pivotal meeting, Moroccan officials, including Abdeltif Loudyi, the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government responsible for National Defense Administration, and General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Armed Forces and Commander of the Southern Zone, met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon. The discussions were attended by the Moroccan Ambassador to Washington, Youssef Amrani, and U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan III. The dialogue focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in defense, defense industry, and cybersecurity realms, thereby reinforcing the historical and exemplary relations that underpin the alliance between Morocco and the United States.

Commitment to Regional Stability and Security

The Moroccan delegation took the opportunity to acknowledge the unwavering U.S. support for Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara territory. They emphasized Morocco's proactive role as a committed actor in promoting regional peace and security, which is essential for stability and prosperity at both regional and international levels. This renewed commitment to cooperation reflects a mutual understanding of the security challenges faced by both nations.

In a recent statement, Elbridge Colby, the U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, highlighted that this new framework aims to guide and structure military relations over the next decade. The emphasis will be placed on enhancing interoperability, developing operational capabilities, and ensuring effective coordination in response to common security challenges faced by both countries. This agreement not only solidifies the military partnership but also serves as a testament to the growing strategic ties between Morocco and the United States.
