After prolonged deliberations, the authorities of France and Morocco appear to have reached a consensus regarding a high-level meeting between the Prime Ministers, scheduled for the summer of 2026. This gathering aims to address crucial issues surrounding energy, defense, and a bilateral friendship treaty, which are set to be at the forefront of discussions.
The French President has approved the appointment of the new ambassador to Morocco, a seasoned diplomat from the Quai d'Orsay who will succeed Christophe Lecourtier, now appointed to lead the French Development Agency. Additionally, France and Morocco have established a committee comprising around a dozen prominent figures tasked with formulating proposals to strengthen their bilateral relationship. It is anticipated that the outcome of this initiative will lead to the signing of a friendship treaty during King Mohammed VI's forthcoming state visit, which is still under negotiation.
As both Rabat and Paris focus on their diplomatic calendar, they are also preparing to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the French protectorate, an event scheduled for March 2, 2026. Meanwhile, Paris is facing challenges in identifying the right profile to head its diplomatic chancery in Morocco, creating a sense of uncertainty within the kingdom. The Moroccan ambassador to France, Mohammed Benchaaboun, has been called back to Rabat for new responsibilities, further complicating the situation.
