Historic Meeting Marks New Era in Morocco-Kazakhstan Relations
On July 21, 2026, the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM) hosted the inaugural meeting of the Morocco-Kazakhstan Business Council, a significant step towards enhancing economic relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Kazakhstan. This pivotal gathering was presided over by CGEM President Mehdi Tazi, and attended by Kazakhstan's Deputy Foreign Minister Alibek Kuantyrov along with a substantial delegation comprising institutional representatives and business leaders from both nations.
During his opening remarks, Mr. Tazi emphasized that this first session transcends the mere establishment of a new cooperative body; it represents the initiation of a permanent dialogue framework between the business communities of the two countries. He highlighted the remarkable 68% increase in trade between Morocco and Kazakhstan since 2021, which has surpassed $460 million, illustrating a significant yet largely untapped potential for cooperation.
Exploring Economic Complementarities and Future Opportunities
The CGEM President also pointed out the complementary nature of the two economies, particularly in sectors such as fertilizers and agriculture, logistics, infrastructure, energy, digital technology, and artificial intelligence. He underscored Morocco's strategic advantages as a gateway to African and European markets, while also recognizing Kazakhstan's role as a bridge to Central Asia, advocating for the establishment of a robust economic corridor linking the two regions.
Mr. Kuantyrov reaffirmed Kazakhstan's commitment to strengthening economic ties with Morocco, praising the launch of the Business Council as a tangible mechanism to promote investments, industrial partnerships, and trade exchanges between enterprises from both countries. Following this, Driss Benomar, the Moroccan side's Business Council President, and Murat Karimssakov, the Kazakh side's Council President and head of the Kazakhstan International Chamber of Commerce, outlined the priorities of this new economic cooperation platform.
The session featured presentations from Moroccan and Kazakh companies and institutions focusing on various sectors including information technology, finance, agribusiness, port infrastructure, telecommunications, and investment opportunities. This was followed by B2B exchanges among participants aimed at identifying concrete avenues for collaboration.
Through this Business Council, the CGEM reinforces its dedication to bolstering economic partnerships with Central Asian markets and creating new trade and investment opportunities for Moroccan enterprises, ultimately fostering shared economic growth that generates jobs and adds value.
