Empowering Women Through Dialogue: A Special BBC World Service Event

The BBC World Service program, BBC World Questions, is set to host a special edition in Marrakech on Wednesday, June 10, dedicated to discussing the rights and roles of women in a rapidly changing world. This initiative aims to place young Moroccan women at the forefront of a national conversation about their rights, beliefs, and the reform of family law, particularly at a time when a new generation is advocating for more visible social changes in Morocco.

A Vital Discussion on Family Code and Freedoms

Jonny Dymond will lead the program, facilitating a panel that features engaged young voices. The discussions are expected to tackle sensitive issues, including child marriage, polygamy, inheritance rights, sexual harassment, and the concepts of freedom and modesty. The stated goal of this program is to create an interactive format that invites public participation, making audience questions the heart of the debate.

The panel will include diverse profiles, such as Frizzy, a rapper and performer of the song The Time Has Come, which serves as an anthem for women's equality; Meryem Redouane, head of the women's section at the International Islamic Federation of Student Organisations (IIFSO); Kaoutar Rias, an architecture student at the National School of Architecture in Tétouan and a member of the National Council for Student Renovation (OREMA); and Yousra Salhi, a feminist digital content creator and women's rights activist.

According to Gwenan Roberts, an editor at BBC World Service, this edition aims to directly hear from young Moroccan women regarding their vision for society and the ongoing cultural transformations. The event will take place at the Les Étoiles de Jemaa el Fna center in Marrakech, in partnership with BBC News Arabic and the Ali Zaoua Foundation. The public reception is scheduled to start at 6 PM, featuring refreshments, followed by a session for collecting audience questions.

The program will first air on BBC World Service radio on Saturday, June 13, and will subsequently be available online on BBC Sounds and other podcast platforms. The television version is set to be released on the BBC World Service and BBC News channels starting June 20. The program is produced by Charlie Taylor.
