In a significant crackdown, Spanish authorities have successfully intercepted a major attempt to smuggle a substantial quantity of cannabis originating from Morocco, amounting to 350 kilograms. This operation involved dismantling a criminal network engaged in the transportation and distribution of drugs via complex logistical routes, highlighting the ongoing activities of drug trafficking organizations operating between Morocco and Europe.
On Wednesday, the Spanish National Police announced, as reported by local media, that the security operation, led by the Drug and Organized Crime Unit in Las Palmas, resulted in the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of trucks and equipment linked to the illicit network. Additionally, the authorities confiscated 350 kilograms of cannabis that were intended for distribution within the Canary Islands.
According to information disclosed by the Spanish security services, investigations began in early 2026 after the detection of a criminal network receiving shipments of cannabis from Morocco. The network was reportedly re-packaging and concealing these shipments within seemingly legitimate cargo transported by logistics companies operating in the region.
The probe revealed that members of the network employed various concealment tactics to evade detection, utilizing rented trucks and altering modes of transportation. They also camouflaged the drugs among agricultural products to divert suspicion from the smuggled shipments.
During the primary security intervention, investigators discovered 350 kilograms of cannabis hidden among boxes of corn intended for distribution, in an attempt to pass the shipment without drawing attention. However, Spanish authorities successfully thwarted the operation and dismantled the network.
The Spanish National Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify other potential accomplices and to uncover all facets of the network. Meanwhile, the Spanish judiciary has ordered that the three arrested individuals be held in preventive custody pending the completion of legal proceedings.
This operation comes at a time when Spain and other European countries are witnessing a rise in seizures of cannabis shipments linked to routes originating from Morocco, raising concerns about the persistence of organized networks that are capable of evolving their methods to circumvent checkpoints.
