Spanish Onions Surge in Moroccan Market Amid Rising Local Prices

Surge in Spanish Onion Imports Due to Local Price Hikes

As of April 9, 2026, the Moroccan market is witnessing a significant influx of Spanish onions, prompted by a dramatic increase in the prices of locally sourced onions. Despite concerns regarding the quality of the imported product, consumers are gravitating towards these imports, which are currently available at nearly half the price of domestic varieties during a period of national scarcity.

Financial considerations are taking precedence in Moroccan markets, where the price of local onions has soared to approximately 18 dirhams per kilogram. In stark contrast, the cost of Spanish onions ranges between 8 and 10 dirhams, making them an attractive alternative for budget-conscious buyers. This stark price differential is steering consumer choices toward the more economical option, as shoppers prioritize affordability over potential quality issues.

The dominance of Spanish onions in the market can be attributed to seasonal factors. The conclusion of the harvest season for the highly regarded "karkoub" variety has led to a sudden decline in the local supply, compelling the market to seek solutions beyond its borders. Market trader Abdelkassem from Agadir explains, "This scarcity is temporary. We will have to wait until summer for supply levels to normalize again," highlighting the transient nature of the current situation.

In the interim, various Spanish onion varieties, including white, red, and yellow onions, are filling the gaps on supermarket shelves. However, sellers express reservations about the imported product, noting that prolonged transportation and refrigeration may adversely affect both the flavor and freshness of the onions. Despite these concerns regarding culinary quality, Moroccan consumers continue to prioritize cost-effective options in the current economic climate.
