Spain's Ambitious Squad for the World Cup
The Spanish national football team, under the leadership of young sensation Lamine Yamal, is setting its sights on securing a second World Cup title. Head coach Luis de la Fuente unveiled a 26-member squad in Madrid for the upcoming tournament set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Notable players included in the lineup are Alejandro Grimaldo from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen, Marc Cucurella of Chelsea FC, and midfield strategist Rodri from Manchester City, all of whom are expected to contribute significantly to the team's quest for glory.
At just 18 years old, Yamal has recently recovered from a thigh injury and stands as one of eight players representing national champions FC Barcelona. In a surprising twist, there are no players from arch-rivals Real Madrid in the World Cup squad. Additionally, veteran right-back Daniel Carvajal, who completed his final season at Real, was also omitted by the 64-year-old de la Fuente, showcasing a shift towards a new generation of talent.
Spain's World Cup Journey Begins
The 2010 World Cup champions are set to kick off their tournament journey on June 15 in Atlanta, facing the clear underdog and tournament newcomer Cape Verde. In Group H, Spain will also contend against Saudi Arabia on June 21, again in Atlanta, and will take on two-time World Cup champions Uruguay on June 27 in Zapopan, near Guadalajara. Spain's last World Cup appearance ended in disappointment, as they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by the surprise team Morocco. However, after the resignation of Luis Enrique, de la Fuente has successfully rejuvenated the squad, leading them to victory at the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany.
