El Bakkali Dominates the 3000m Steeplechase

In an exhilarating display of athletic prowess, Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali clinched victory in the 3000m steeplechase at the Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athletisme de Rabat, held on Sunday, October 31. This triumph not only brought joy to the local crowd but also marked a significant moment in El Bakkali's career as he showcased his exceptional talent on home soil. The two-time Olympic and world champion clocked an impressive time of 7:57.25, marking his fifth consecutive victory at the prestigious Diamond League event in Rabat. Germany's Frederik Ruppert also made headlines, finishing second with a personal best of 7:57.80, which set a new European record. Kenya’s Simon Koech joined the elite ranks by dipping under the eight-minute mark, recording a personal best of 7:59.44. Notably, this race became the third in history where the top three competitors finished in under eight minutes, underscoring the extraordinary depth of talent present at the event.

Record-Breaking Performances Across Events

The excitement continued as USA’s Joe Kovacs and Kenny Bednarek made their mark with outstanding performances in their respective events. Kovacs, a two-time world shot put champion, unleashed a world-leading throw of 22.58m, surpassing the previous meeting record of 22.47m set by world record-holder Ryan Crouser in 2017. Crouser, who finished second with a throw of 21.59m, was unable to reclaim his record, while fellow American athletes Jordan Geist and Roger Steen rounded out the top four.

Bednarek, a two-time Olympic silver medallist, showcased his speed in the 200m, finishing in a remarkable meeting record of 19.69 seconds, well ahead of Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo, who clocked a time of 19.96 seconds. In the women's 100m, Jamaica’s Tina Clayton dominated, running 10.85 seconds to lead a Jamaican sweep of the podium, with Lavanya Williams and Jonielle Smith following closely behind.

The 400m hurdles showcased a fierce competition between Slovakia's Emma Zapletalova and the USA’s Anna Cockrell, with Zapletalova achieving a world-leading national record of 52.82 seconds, marking her first performance under 53 seconds. Meanwhile, USA's Cambrea Sturgis celebrated her first Diamond League win in the 200m, finishing in a time of 22.21 seconds.

Audrey Werro from Switzerland displayed her dominance in the 800m, securing victory in a meeting record time of 1:56.56, while Australia’s Nina Kennedy made a triumphant return to the pole vault with a clearance of 4.80m. The meet concluded with thrilling contests in the high jump, javelin, and hurdles, solidifying Rabat's reputation as a premier destination for elite athletics.
