Significant Progress on High-Speed Train Project Connecting Marrakech and Agadir

The Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Guioh, recently announced substantial advancements in the high-speed train project that aims to connect Marrakech and Agadir. He confirmed that the technical and engineering studies related to this strategic initiative have been finalized, marking a crucial step towards entering more advanced stages of execution.

During a parliamentary session, the government official highlighted that the total cost of the project is estimated to be around 55 billion dirhams. However, he noted that the realization of this ambitious plan hinges on securing international financing and specialized technical partnerships, given its complex nature and large scale. This effort will be coordinated with the National Office of Railways.

Guioh mentioned that the proposed route, which traverses the High Atlas region, poses significant engineering challenges. The construction will predominantly involve tunnels and bridges due to the rugged terrain and geographical difficulties the railway line will encounter.

In a related context, the minister reported that the construction of the railway line between Kenitra and Marrakech has reached approximately 30% completion. He affirmed that the work is progressing according to the established timeline, with the expectation that the high-speed train will arrive in Marrakech by September 2029.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the new design of the “Al Boraq” project will enhance rapid connectivity between major urban centers, including Casablanca and Rabat, passing through Mohammed V Airport and the Grand Stadium in Ben Slimane, ultimately reaching Marrakech. This initiative falls within a national vision aimed at modernizing transportation infrastructure and reducing travel times between major cities.
