Significant Drug Bust in Algeria: Over a Quintal of Cannabis Seized from Morocco

Major Drug Operations Uncovered in Algeria

In a remarkable operation carried out by the national security forces this week, authorities successfully dismantled the criminal structure of two organized networks involved in drug trafficking in Western Algeria. This operation resulted in the seizure of over one quintal and thirty-six kilograms of processed cannabis originating from Morocco, as well as the arrest of four individuals, according to a statement released by the authorities on Thursday.

The first operation was executed by the regional anti-drug trafficking unit in Bechar, thwarting an attempt to smuggle a substantial shipment of drugs from Morocco, totaling seventy-nine kilograms and two hundred fifty grams of processed cannabis. This intervention led to the arrest of three members of the criminal network and the recovery of a significant sum of three hundred sixty-five million Algerian dinars linked to the illicit activities.

Meanwhile, the second operation was conducted by the mobile judicial police unit in the Sidi Bel-Abbes region, where officers confiscated fifty-seven kilograms of processed cannabis, effectively crippling the operational capacity of the organized network. One member of this group was apprehended, and a vehicle used for transporting the illicit substances was also seized.

The detained suspects were subsequently presented to the respective public prosecutors at both the Bechar and Sidi Bel-Abbes courts. This proactive approach by the Algerian authorities underscores their commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring public safety.
