Severe Sentences for Human Smuggling Network in Morocco

Judicial Actions Against a Human Smuggling Syndicate

The Court of First Instance specializing in financial crimes at the Appeals Court in Fez has imposed a total of 23 years of imprisonment on members of a criminal network involved in organizing irregular migration and human trafficking along the coasts of the provinces of Al Hoceima and Nador. Among those sentenced is one defendant who had previously been extradited from Spain to Moroccan authorities, while the remaining members of the network were tried in absentia due to their ongoing flight from the country.

The case dates back to the dismantling of this specialized network, which was brought to light following a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of several migrant lives at sea during one of the irregular journeys organized by the syndicate. Investigations revealed the identities of the perpetrators and outlined their roles in recruiting candidates for irregular migration and orchestrating their smuggling operations via maritime routes. This culminated in the issuance of the aforementioned judicial sentences.
